Bloom -
This plant blooms in its third year of development.
Winter -
You may allow this plant to
freeze back to the ground, then cut the trunk. If you live in an
extremely cold climate, (lower than -20º
in the winter,) you will need to mulch, (6" - 10",) and cover the
underground corm. If you provide protection for the trunk, the
plant will have a head start in the spring allowing it possibly
produce a flower.
Mature Height
- Up to 18' - 20' in its third year. If it freezes back in the
winter, it will probably grow to 10' high.
Sun
- Prefers full sun, but will tolerate partial shade.
Water
- While it is practically impossible to over-water, this plant
will not tolerate standing water.
Fertilizer
- All bananas are heavy feeders. Provide plenty of water and
fertilizer during the growing season.
Soil
- All bananas need rich, well draining soil. If the soil is poor,
you can fertilize weekly. If the soil is rich, once a month is
sufficient.
Container
- The plant will grow smaller in a pot than in a garden, however
you will be able to take it inside for the winter.
*Note: To avoid wind damage, place
this plant in a sheltered spot. This will prevent the leaves from
getting tattered.
