CALATHEA

Calathea is a jungle plant – native of the Tropical Americas. The dramatic foliage makes it a wonderful addition to indoor tropical gardens and landscapes of warm, humid climate.

Calathea Ornata has oblong, pointed leaves with stripes of pink dark green background and a deep magenta underside. The pink vein pattern turns white as the leaf matures. The white flower is not showy.

Calathea Zebrina has oblong, pointed leaves with a striped pattern of silvery green and dark green. It blooms in the spring. The white flower is small and not significant.

Hardiness Zone – 10 or houseplant. The best temperature range is between 60 and 85° Fahrenheit.
Bloom – White.
Winter - Protect the plant from draft and even mild cold.
Mature Height - This plant will grow to 36”.
Sun – Calatheas like bright indirect sunlight – however it is tolerant of low light levels indoors, making it an excellent houseplant. Prolonged direct sunlight damages the plant.
Water - Keep soil evenly moist. If possible, use lukewarm water for watering. Calatheas prefer high air humidity that can be achieved by frequent misting.
Fertilizer - Use a soluble fertilizer at half strength every 2 weeks.
Soil - This plant prefers slightly acidic, rich organic soil. Good draining is very important.
Container - This is an excellent container plant.

CANNA INDICA 'SUNSET'

This is an amazing landscape or patio plant that tolerates neglect, easy to grow.

The leaves of the young plant are maroon variegated that slowly turns strong green with red edges. Young or mature – the plant has very beautiful foliage. The flowers are much smaller than the cultivated varieties’ – but it makes up for it with its brilliant red color. The seed pods are very ornamental and long lasting.

Hardiness Zone – 6-11. In the summer in can be grown as high as zone 3.
Bloom – Bright red. The seed pods start out dark, maroon red and slowly turn darker as they ripen.
Winter –
In colder climate dig up the rhizome for the winter.
Mature Height – 3-6’
Sun – Full sun to partial shade.
Water - Keep soil moist. The plant tolerates dry periods, but it will stun the growth.
Fertilizer – Cannas are heavy feeders. It will reward regular fertilizing with beauty and size.
Soil - This plant is adaptable to different soils, but will do best in rich organic soil.
Container - This is a good container plant.

PEACE LILY - PETITE

Spathiphyllum 'petite'

This plant is very easy to grow. It is an ideal indoor plant that tolerates low-light conditions very well. It has elegant white flowers and glossy dark green leaves that brighten any indoor environment.

This is a virtually trouble-free plant which requires low maintenance. It is also one of the top 10 most effective plants for removing indoor air pollution.

Hardiness Zone - 9b. Ideally suite for temperatures between 65Ί and 90Ί Fahrenheit. This is a cold sensitive plant.
Bloom - Pure white free flowering bloom. The flowers reach high above the foliage.
Winter -

Mature Height - 12" - 18"
Sun - This plant prefers bright, filtered light but will tolerate low light.
Water - Keep soil moist but not soggy.
Fertilizer - Use a balanced fertilizer - once a month in the growing season.

PHILODENDRON MOONLIGHT

This is an excellent indoor plant. Its leaves are a stunning yellow when they unfurl, with leaves that turn greener as they mature. The youngest leaves are always yellow. For a tropical plant it is fairly hardy, and has survived mid 30 temperatures without damage.

This plant is the self heading variety.

Hardiness Zone - 10. This plant is most suited to a temperature range of 65Ί to 85Ί Fahrenheit. It does not do well in temperatures above 95Ί. In lower temperatures, (down to the mid 30s,) its growth stops. This plant does not tolerate frost.

Winter -

Mature Height - 18" - 24"
Sun - This plant is best suited to 90% shade. Too much light will cause its leaves to turn the leaves white, which will eventually cause necrosis.
Water - Requires moderate watering. Soil should be fairly dry between watering.
Fertilizer - Use a balanced, time release fertilizer. A yearly application of Magnesium, (Magnesium Sulfate) will benefit the plant. This is a low feeder.
Soil - It requires a well draining, loose soil.
Container - This is an excellent container plant.
